Meet the Artisans

Meet the Artisans

Behind every Diloana Tsa Afrika chess set is a human story.

Our pieces are handcrafted by skilled artisans across Southern Africa — men and women who have learned their craft through years of practice, patience, and knowledge passed down through generations.

This page honours the hands, lives, and journeys behind our work.

A Life Shaped by Wood

For many of our artisans, working with wood began at a young age.

In communities where employment opportunities are limited, craftsmanship becomes more than a skill — it becomes a way to survive, to provide, and to take pride in honest work. Learning often happens informally: watching elders, practising with simple tools, and improving through repetition and time.

What starts as raw timber slowly becomes something meaningful — a chessboard, a carved piece, a work of patience and focus.

Daily Work, Real Conditions

A typical day begins early.

Wood is selected carefully, tools are prepared, and work continues slowly and deliberately. Many of our artisans work without modern machinery, stable electricity, or guaranteed income. Despite these challenges, the commitment to quality remains constant.

Every curve, every square, and every detail is shaped by hand, guided by experience rather than speed.

Why This Craft Matters

Craftsmanship provides more than income.

It offers dignity, independence, and the ability to support families through skill rather than charity. By creating access to fair markets, our artisans are able to earn from their work and keep traditional skills alive for the next generation.

When you purchase a Diloana Tsa Afrika chess set, you support this cycle of craftsmanship, livelihood, and cultural preservation.

Growing Stories

As our journey continues, we will share individual artisan profiles and photographs, allowing you to meet the people behind each piece more closely.

For now, we honour them collectively — through their work, their dedication, and the stories carried in every handcrafted piece.
